Equality Act 2010
The Equality Act 2010 is the primary legislation protecting individuals from discrimination in England, Scotland and Wales. It replaced most previous anti-discrimination legislation, including the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), bringing together a number of separate Acts into a single legal framework.
The Act places a duty on organisations providing goods, services and facilities to the public to make reasonable adjustments where disabled people would otherwise be placed at a substantial disadvantage compared with non-disabled people. These duties apply to a wide range of organisations, including:
- Retail premises
- Offices and commercial buildings
- Healthcare providers
- Educational establishments
- Hotels and hospitality venues
- Leisure facilities
- Financial institutions
- Public sector organisations
- Community buildings and places of worship
Private clubs and associations may also have obligations under the Equality Act depending on the services they provide.
In Northern Ireland, accessibility legislation continues to be governed primarily by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA).
Accessibility and Building Regulations
Accessibility should also be considered alongside the relevant Building Regulations. In England, guidance is provided within Approved Document M – Access to and Use of Buildings, which covers the design of accessible entrances, circulation routes and facilities for disabled people.
Wireless access assistance products, such as accessible doorbells and call systems, can form part of an inclusive building design by enabling visitors who may have difficulty accessing a building independently to request assistance quickly and easily.
